Osprey CR9 at Gallery Hide , RSPB Loch of Kinnordy
Date: July 3rd, 2025
Time: Evening
Conditions: Windy, rippled water surface
Location: Loch-side hide with view of nesting osprey
A shallow loch fringed by reedbeds, wet woodland, and open fen—Loch of Kinnordy is a quiet haven tucked into the Angus landscape. Managed by the RSPB, it offers rich wetland biodiversity and year-round birdlife, with hides and boardwalks that invite slow observation and immersive fieldwork.
Several hours spent observing the locally nesting osprey, CR9, as it hunted over the loch. Conditions were tricky—windy, with ripples breaking the surface and making it hard to spot fish. CR9 made multiple attempts but didn’t manage a successful dive.
As the sun set, I got some strong silhouette shots of the osprey hovering above the water. These images have since been used in the Salt Fell Studio logo.

Midgies were out in force tonight. Clouds of them.
On the walk back, the path was alive with movement—hundreds of “wee froggies” hopping through the dusk. —likely young toads, freshly emerged and moving through the damp woodland.
